Help Put The Show On!

Volunteering

Roanoke Children's Theatre is a small professional theatre in downtown Roanoke, VA and we are always looking for a couple of extra hands to help us bring professional theatre to our area. Volunteers have always played a very special role at Roanoke Children's Theatre. As a volunteer, you can add energy to RCT while contributing your time to Roanoke's only professional theatre for children. We are currently looking for year-round volunteers in the following areas: box office, ushering, group sales, events, fundraising, outreach, birthday parties, marketing. If you are interested, please contact 540-309-6802 or email roanokechildrenstheatre@gmail.com. If working backstage is your forte, we also accept limited volunteers in our production department (loading in sets, costumes etc.).

Be an Usher!

Do you like working with kids and public patrons? Would you like to contribute to the arts of the Roanoke Valley? Would you like to see a Roanoke Children's Theatre show for free?

If you answered yes, then our Usher Program might be perfect for you!

Volunteer ushers are an important part of the RCT family. Whether seating a classroom of elementary school children who are about to see their first play, or helping a family find seats together at a night at the theatre, RCT ushers ensure that our theatre patrons have the best possible experience when coming to see one of our shows!

Ushering is a great service project for older students fulfilling volunteer service hours, or groups looking for an opportunity to help the community. It is also a great opportunity for retired patrons looking for a way to fill free time and give back to the Roanoke Valley.

RCT needs ushers for School Performances, which take place on weekday mornings (9:30am and 11:30am), and Public Performances, which take place in the evening and Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Ushers should arrive 1 hour before show time and should play to stay throughout the entire performance.

Usher Duties

  • Dress in "dress up" attire.
  • Seat audience and distribute Playbills and Teacher Study Guides
  • Help with Box Office (ticket sales, phone, gift shop... etc.)
  • Assist audience members with special needs
  • Direct and Assist audience to restrooms as needed during performance
  • Understand our emergency exit procedures
  • Help pick-up theatre after each performance
  • Smile and make coming to a show at the Roanoke Children's Theatre a great time at the theatre!
